Machine Learning Scientist III

We are looking for a Machine Learning Scientist III to join our growing Travel Search & Discovery team. This position focuses on the development and optimization of Expedia’s Search & Discovery AI models including natural language search, multi-modal search, and generative AI–based discovery. The ideal candidate for this position is a true deep learning expert who can develop effective AI solutions for search and discovery. Innovation and developing cutting-edge technology as well as implementing industry-leading solutions are key responsibilities of this role. The machine learning models and algorithms you develop will improve the experiences of millions of travelers and travel partners each year.
In this role, you will:
Research, design, and develop machine learning models to improve travel search, personalization, and recommendation systems
Develop algorithms that understand user intent, optimize relevance, and surface the most meaningful travel products and options
Build and evaluate large-scale retrieval, ranking, and personalization models for structured and unstructured travel data
Apply best-in-class machine learning techniques to solve the business problems at hand
Stay ahead of emerging ML techniques in search, discovery, and generative AI, and bring them into real-world applications
Partner with product, data engineering, and platform teams to bring ML models from experimentation to production
Minimum Qualifications:
PhD, MS, or BS in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Information Retrieval, Engineering, or a related field; or equivalent professional experience
3+ years of experience in large scale ML-powered search, discovery, and Recommender systems
Strong foundation in machine learning, deep learning, information retrieval, and recommender systems
Proficiency in Python programming language
Strong knowledge and expertise in TensorFlow and/or PyTorch
Preferred Qualifications:
Hands-on experience with ranking models, search relevance, personalization, or large-scale retrieval systems
Proven knowledge of processing and analyzing large scale data volumes, semi-structured and unstructured data and near real-time throughput
Starting pay for this role will vary based on multiple factors, including location, available budget, and an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience. Pay ranges may be modified in the future.
